If you asked me years ago where I’d want to travel I’d tell you something like Peru, Europe, India, anything with culture and history. Or even anywhere in America, cos I love road tripping in the vast beautiful land we have here. But Hawaii? C’mon– it’s just beaches and more beaches over there. I live in Los Angeles. I can go to the beach anytime. For years my husband has wanted to take us, because he had gone as a kid and loved it. So about 5 years or so ago, we each got a key ring for our keys with a palmtree with the word “Hawaii” on it. The purpose of it was to remind us to pray for the opportunity to go. Life got in the way and praying was intermittent. But this last year I remembered it and prayed about it more often. And then my palm tree broke. My husband started talking more and more about how he wanted to take us. And voila! The doors did open and we were blessed with the opportunity to go. And around the time we booked the trip– my husbands palm tree broke too… coincidence? We didn’t need them anymore, cos we were going to Hawaii!
We had to pick an Island. So we decided to go to Maui since our friends (Christafari and Solomon Jabby) would be touring there around the time we wanted to go. It was so awesome to travel far away from home and be on an island with familiar faces. We all stayed at this B&B called Peace of Maui in Makawao. It’s on a large parcel of land overlooking the beautiful pineapple fields and Mountain. Every morning the kids would go outside to play with the owner’s dogs on the huge property. I loved staying at this beautiful place, because it was perfect for making friends with other travelers or even locals. If it wasn’t raining too hard we’d go to the beach with Christafari, watch them film their next music video with an iphone, shop for food in Paia, follow Ziza around, visit Twin Falls, or go to a show in the evening.

Yes, we did see lots of beautiful beaches. And yes, we did enjoy them, but Maui is so much more– the people, the culture, the forests, waterfalls, different climates, and did I mention the people? More in Part II.
